Why is tiktok so popular?

Since its launch in China in 2016, TikTok has become one of the world’s fastest-growing social networks. It’s been downloaded billions of times and attracted hundreds of millions of users. But have you ever wonder why?  Many people can't tell why is TikTok so entertaining but they just can't stop watching. WHY?

TikTok recommendation algorithms(also used by many other social medias)

The main reason for tiktok being so popular is the algorithms that power TikTok’s “For You”. While other platforms are geared more toward highlighting content with mass appeal, TikTok’s algorithms seem just as likely to pluck a new creator out of obscurity as they are to feature a known star. And they’re particularly adept at feeding relevant content to niche communities of users who share a particular interest or identity.

How does this work?

You might notice that everyone's "for you page" in Tiktok differs, this is because tiktok recommendation algorithms helps you to filter the millions of videos that were created each day and show you the one's your most likely be interested in. According to the TikTok page, this for you page is powered by a recommendation system that delivers content to each user that is likely to be of interest to that particular user with each person’s feed is unique and tailored to that specific individual.

A recommendation engine or recommendation system filters the data to extract the relevant information (pre-processing) and design algorithms to recommend the most relevant items to users based on the past behavior of users. A company like YouTube, Netflix, Facebook, Amazon, and the list goes on, has used some kind of recommendation engine in some ways in their applications.

What kind of features have been used?

  • accounts you follow
  • comments you post
  • the content you create
  • Share the content
  • replays of the video
  • Captions
  • Video Format
  • Hashtags
  • Music and sounds
  • Creative effects, voice effects
  • Watch Time: recommendation system takes watch time as a signal that users are enjoying your content
  • many more……
